Project Exposure Assessment / Environmental Chemicals

Institute of Environmental Systems Research

Head: Michael Matthies
Scientific Supervisor: Stefan Trapp

Key words: Environmental Systems Analysis; Exposure Assessment; Risk Analysis; QSAR; Environmental modeling.

Purpose and Scope:
More than 100 000 chemicals are available on the EU market
>3000 'new' chemicals in the European Union (1982-1995)
129 chemicals classified as dangerous for water (FRG 1992)
??? chemicals dangerous for ???

Several models are developed for the prediction of pollutant behaviour in the environment. By use of a small number of data, the fate of chemicals in the environment and the potential environmental concentration is estimated. This knowledge may be used to decide the potential hazard of the chemical and to avoid the critical impact of chemicals on the environment.
